A New Trip is Born

The Montana River Outfitters Belize Fly Fishing and Multi-Sport Adventure came about from a chance meeting around hors d’oeuvres at a National Outfitters Conference in 2014. Craig Madsen of Montana River Outfitters and Tim Boys, founder of Island Expeditions, a Craig-Linda-saltwater-1024x768company that has specialized in providing outfitting services in Belize for 30 years. They found themselves talking about their mutual passion for fishing.  Craig shared his vision of a modestly priced Belize vacation package that would satisfy the interests of many of his friends and clients, to catch bonefish and reef fish on a fly rod, while also adding an exciting family and couples-friendly dimension of snorkeling, paddle-boarding, sea kayaking, and inland tours, all at a reasonable price. Craig was looking for a quality Belize fly fishing experience but less expensive than the Belize and Bahamas fly fishing lodges he was familiar with.  This conversation resulted in Craig and his wife traveling to Belize for a Glover’s Reef trip in 2015 and 2016. The experience for Linda and Craig was exceptional. The staff, guides, facilities, meals, lodging – the entire experience was absolutely first rate – and Craig indulged himself by catching plenty of bonefish and reef fish every day too! It has been  a wonderful experience and naturally we began to plan what we could do to enhance the trip for the fly fisher. The result is this custom fishing/adventure travel combo trip to Belize, where we have added a full time fly fishing guide with a fly fishing skiff to the standard Glover’s Reef trip. We have come up with an itinerary to provide a wonderful Belizean multi-sport experience while offering ample guided fly fishing opportunities on the flats at a remote tropical atoll off the coast of Belize. This trip offers great value and a reasonable cost.

Fly Fishing Option

This adventure travel/fly fishing trip is a fully guided experience, but not a fully guided fly fishing trip. While there will be guided options daily, including an option for fly fishing, not everyone will be able to have a fly fishing guide every day. This will not be a traditional 1 guide with 2 anglers in a boat experience; rather, fly fishing will be an option each day as will other activities like snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and kayak sailing. Each morning and afternoon there will be opportunities for 2-8 persons to either receive fly fishing lessons or enjoy fly fishing with a guide, or both. A skilled fly fishing guide and boat will be available each day. Craig will also be available to provide assistance and advice on salt water fly fishing throughout the trip. Additionally, there will be opportunities in the mornings before breakfast and afternoons before dinner for self-guided wade fishing around the island. Bonefish, a variety of other flats fish and reef fish are generally available at a number of locations around the island. (Craig caught fish every morning and afternoon, before and after guided activities, while others were sleeping, relaxing, or enjoying other activities.) Fly fishing for bonefish is not the only fishing opportunity available. Spin fishers and fly anglers alike will enjoy the great variety of opportunities for reef fishing, other flats fish, including permit, as well as opportunities for traditional hand line fishing.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own fly or spin fishing gear.  A fly fishing rental package is available that will include the use of a fly rod and reel, flies, leaders, and tippet.

With an option to focus on fly fishing to the schools of bonefish feeding on numerous nearby sand and grass flats.  Glover’s Reef is one of the most spectacular marine environments in Belize and offers the best kayaking, snorkeling, and diving in the Caribbean. Due to its isolation from the mainland, the waters are exceptionally clear with a rich reef ecosystem.
Our itinerary is flexible in order to accommodate individual and group preferences. Activities include paddling, snorkeling the inner and outer walls of the reef, SUP and learning to sail a kayak. In the mornings and evenings, we host informative sessions on a range of topics. This allows our guides to share their vast knowledge of Belize, its unique marine environments, and the local culture with you.
